Dear Guest Guest,

Deeper Than Deep Space

Due to a sudden illness, Massey Campos who was originally scheduled to present "Why They Want You Hopeless" was unable to attend our meeting last Tuesday evening. But, with some clever scheduling sleight of hand, speaker coordinator Jeff Carmen was able to find a more than suitable replacement - Luke Angstadt. Luke is an active member of Manatee Patriots and has written a number of books on theology and contemporary life. His presentation was entitled "AI and God" and included substantial material from his most recent work on Finding The Tree of Life.

Luke introduced a number of heady concepts including the notion of a "Technological Singularity" which is the point at which machine learning eclipses human intellect. He provided a framework for these concepts from history and religious thought with some contemporary movies for good measure. It was an intriguing discussion and warrants your careful review.

We have recorded the presentation and have uploaded to the "Past Meetings Videos" page of our website. To go there now, just click this link.

Next Tuesday, October 10, we are pleased to have Keith Green as our featured speaker. Keith is a candidate for Manatee County Commissioner District 7 At Large. So you will certainly want to be on hand for Keith's presentation.

Boy, that was some dessert!

We don't know who the donor was but that huge layer cake on the dessert table was awesome! Remember, our potluck dinners are your gift to other like-minded patriots. So be generous and share in the celebration of our Freedoms.

We're Late!

Informed readers will notice that this week's Thursday's newsletter is late being that it is already Friday. Management apologizes for this unfortunate delay and promises to take the appropriate steps to discipline the offending staff members for this egregious oversight.

And be sure to check out our full calendar at https://manateepatriots.us.

Motion To Amend Manatee County School Board Policy To Consider Hillsdale College's "1776 Project" Defeated

At the September 26 meeting of the Manatee County School Board, a motion was introduced by Richard Tatem, School Board member from District 5, to amend the current School Board policy (2520) to allow material which is not on the Florida Department of Education's standard list of core curricula to be reviewed for possible inclusion in the District's curricula.  This policy states that:  "The instructional materials shall be from the State-adopted instructional materials list if there has been a State adoption or from publishers and other resources if there has not been a State adoption."

While allowing for the inclusion of "supplemental material", this  policy dictates that all core curricula material must strictly adhere to the standards set forth by the Florida DOE.  This prevents other material, like the material from Hillsdale College which is advocated by many parents and residents, from becoming part of the core instructional material used in Manatee County schools.

However, it should be noted that Florida Statute (fs 1006.28 - F. Instructional Materials for K-12 Public Education especially 1006.28(2)(a)(1)) states that

"Each district school board is responsible for the content of all instructional materials and any other materials used in a classroom, made available in a school or classroom library, or included on a reading list, whether adopted and purchased from the state-adopted instructional materials list, adopted and purchased through a district instructional materials program under s. 1006.283, or otherwise purchased or made available."  By including only material specified by the FLDOE, the Board has surrendered its ability to consider including other important instructional material widely favored by teachers and parents as part of the core curricula.

Several arguments were offered in opposition to this motion including a notion of "...unintended consequences.." and "..opening a Pandora's box" of issues.  In the end Board members Chad Choate, Mary Foreman and Gina Messinger voted in opposition to the motion while Richard Tatem and Cindy Spray voted in favor of the measure.

The section of the recorded meeting related to this discussion has been posted on the home page of our website.  To go there now, simply click here.  We will leave it up to our readers to decide whether this outcome was justified.

Help Preserve Future Generations

Last year, Governor Ron DeSantis signed legislation establishing November 7 as “Victims of Communism Day”.  The law states that on or about this day, Florida high school students enrolled in classes on US Government must receive at least 45 minutes of instruction on such topics as Joseph Stalin, Fidel Castro, Pol Pot and how victims suffered under these regimes.

However, we feel that only 45 minutes of instruction is inadequate to reveal the true depth of the evils of Communism to future generations of Floridians.

In response, we have formed Victims of Communism-Manatee, Inc., a 501(c) (3) Not for Profit organization to enable high school students to learn firsthand about the horrors of Communism by hearing from people who have endured life under a Communist regime. To encourage students to participate, we have established a competitive Scholarship Program for students in Manatee County public, private and home schools.

But we cannot do this without your help.

We are asking for your tax-deductible donation to help fund our scholarship program.  To learn more about this important program and to make an online donation, please click the button below.

Your generous donation will go a long way toward preserving future generations of Floridians.
